Is it safe? Anti-Wrinkle & Dermal Filler when pregnant or breastfeeding

Updated: Feb 16

The safety of anti-wrinkle injections (colloquially known as Botox) and dermal fillers during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been extensively studied, and there is limited information available on the potential risks to the developing fetus or nursing infant. Therefore, it is generally recommended to avoid these cosmetic procedures during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a precautionary measure.

Is it safe? Anti-Wrinkle & Dermal Filler when pregnant or breastfeeding

1. Anti-Wrinkle Injections when pregnant or breastfeeding:

The dosages of botulinum toxin for cosmetic injectables are very low. There is minimal chance of the product being absorbed by the body systemically as it is targeted only at the localised area injected. The particles are also unlikely to pass into your breastmilk. However, when medications are approved for use by TGA, they are given a classification based on their safety for use in people who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Anti-wrinkle injections fall under the pregnancy B3 category, meaning that the risk to humans (mum and baby) is unknown. Studies in animals have shown teratogenic risk in foetuses.

2. Dermal Filler when pregnant or breastfeeding:

The use of dermal fillers during pregnancy and breastfeeding is generally not recommended due to a lack of comprehensive research on the safety of these cosmetic injectables for the developing fetus or nursing infant. It is crucial to prioritize the health and well-being of both the mother and the baby during these critical periods.

If you have had dermal fillers or anti-wrinkle injections and later find out you’re pregnant, don’t worry. Data shows that in such cases there have been not measurable impacts.

Medical professionals generally adopt a conservative approach when it comes to cosmetic procedures during pregnancy and breastfeeding. With the effects of these substances on the fetus or breastfed infant not being well understood with research, the priority is to ensure the health and safety of both the mother and the child.
